Joy Kunishige, MD

Dr. Joy Kunishige is fellowship-trained in Mohs micrographic surgery and facial plastic reconstruction. She is one of only a handful of dermatologists in the country to be board-certified in both Dermatology and Mohs Micrographic Surgery.

Her surgical fellowship was under the direction of John A. Zitelli, MD, who was trained by Frederic E. Mohs, MD, the founder of Mohs surgery, and David G. Brodland, MD. After fellowship, Dr. Kunishige was honored to stay on and serve as Associate Director of this esteemed fellowship training program.  She trained Mohs surgery fellows, otolaryngology residents, and plastic surgery residents, and was appointed Associate Professor of Plastic Surgery at the University of Pittsburgh Medical Center.

Dr. Kunishige has performed over 16,000 Mohs surgeries.  She specializes in rare and high-risk tumors, and is passionate about surveillance and management of skin cancer in immunocompromised populations, including organ transplant recipients.  She is regularly invited to national meetings to speak about evidence-based treatment of melanoma.  Dr. Kunishige is married with two children.  Her family enjoys golf, travel, and all foods.
